Chablis, Grand Cru Les Clos 05, Christian Moreau - Burgundy - Was £33.50/ Now £26.80 An extra-ordinary release from one of the region's top names, this Grand Cru from the exceptional 2005 vintage is just about as good as Chablis gets. Produced from low yielding old vines on west-facing slopes in the mythical Grand Cru of Les Clos, this perfect rendition is now hitting its stride and provides an ideal candidate for festive indulgement this season. A perfect starter option for shellfish appetisers though is more than a match for turkey as well.
Riesling Kabinett 05, Egon Muller - Mosel - Was £35 / Now £28 The epitome of elegance, delicacy and balance, the wines of Egon Muller are some of the rarest and most sought after whites on the planet today. Hailing from the slopes of the Schwarzhofberger village, these dazzling Rieslings combine purity, sweet fruit, acidity and delicacy like no others can. An intense nose explodes with lime, grapefruit, white blossom, wet slate and honey whilst a procession of citrus fruit, spice and savoury minerality dance across the tongue. Light in alcohol and highly versatile with food, this makes a rewarding choice for shellfish starters as well as a splendid aperitif.
Condrieu 04, Phillipe Faury - Rhone - Was £25 / Now £20 Representing one of France most celebrated and revered names, the exclusively white northern Rhone appellation of Condrieu has established an enviable yet elusive reputation. It is here that the variety Viognier has the capacity to mesmerise, none more so than from a top producer such as Phillipe Faury who, with a TLC approach and prime vineyard locations, consistently produces some of the regions finest examples. Aromatic and hypnotically expressive on the nose, a bouquet of honey, apricot, lavender and nutmeg seduces on the nose, preceding a palate that is full, textural, silky and intense in the mouth. A dreamy partner to goose and turkey this Christmas.
Nuits -St-Georges, 1er Cru Clos des Argilieres 05, Dureuil-Janthial - Burgundy - Was £30 / Now £24 In Burgundy the producer is everything, and it is the smaller artisanal names that often excel in terms of quality, value and drinking gratification. True to form, this sublime effort from the talented Dureuil-Janthial delivers all this and then some, capturing the essence of Nuits-St-Georges in a strawberry, cinnamon and truffle infused Pinot Noir that would shame many pricier examples. Silky, supple, perfumed and effortlessly gratifying, this would be a wonderful choice for turkey or roast beef this season.
Capannelle Solare 00 - Tuscany - Was £45 / Now £36 This acclaimed operation has fast established itself as one of Italy's most exciting, pioneering and coveted names. A blend of Sangiovese and Malvasia Nera, the stunning Solare combines the best of traditional and modern Italy, impressing with concentration and fruit yet possessing an unmistakablely rustic Tuscan identity. Broad and maturing on the nose with a smoky, savoury bouquet of cedar, tobacco, dried fruit, damson and mocha, the palate boasts intensity and opulence set against a deliciously fresh framework of silky tannins and streamlined acidity. Incredible stuff that once tasted is never forgotten; with only tiny quantities available from this cult Tuscan producer, advice is to hurry whilst stocks last.
Rasteau Cotes-du-Rhone Villages 04, Domaine la Soumade, Andre Romero - Rhone - Was £9.50 / Now £7.60 The blockbusting entry-level expression from this pre-eminent Southern Rhone wizard is surely one of this Christmas' best bargains. Utilising incredibly old vine plots of Grenache, Mouvedre and Syrah, this stunner has more in common with Chateauneuf-du-Pape then it's Cotes-du-Rhone counterparts. Blackberry, plums, liquorice, pepper and herbs grace a mouth wateringly enticing nose, emulated by a palate that is mouth filling, rich and deep. Makes a classic combination with roast lamb.
